Orthodontics

Orthodontics – what is it?

Various occlusal malformations are very common in the Polish population. Sometimes they are genetically conditioned, but more often they are the result of bad habits, dysfunctions or premature loss of teeth. In all these cases orthodontics can help both children and adults. Orthodontics methods allow not only to improve the appearance of the patient, but significantly increase his quality of life.

Orthodontics – indications and contraindications

  • Indications

  • Contraindications

All patients with malocclusion in each plane are eligible for orthodontic treatment (overshot or undershot bite, wry mouth, crossbite, overbite, open bite, deep bite) and tooth defects (crowding, rotations, displacement, etc.). Orthodontists also deal with complex cases, e.g. patients with congenital malformations, with numerous orthodontic problems.

Specific indications for orthodontic and surgical treatment are teeth impacted in the bones (see: dental surgery). An orthodontist can also cooperate with a periodontologist, mainly in treatment of crowding, which often causes poor hygiene and periodontal disease.

Orthodontic treatment for children usually begins shortly before entering puberty peak to use bone growth for rapid tooth movement. Earlier treatment usually does not bring significant effects. Exceptions are complex defects, for which individualized multi-disciplinary care is indicated. An important, though relative, contraindication to the installation of the apparatus is incorrect oral hygiene, because the orthodontic braces predispose to accumulate plaque, which may cause caries and gingivitis. Orthodontic treatment is also contraindicated in the presence of unstable periodontitis, especially when the teeth supposed to be moved forward. In extreme cases, this may result in significant exposure of teeth necks (recessions) and even falling out of teeth.

Orthodontics – types of treatments

Orthodontic treatment is based on removable (mainly for children) or permanent orthodontic appliances. In our clinic, the implementation of removable orthodontic apparatuses is significantly accelerated thanks to the neighbouring prosthetic laboratory. It allows the orthodontist and dental technician to work actively at all stages of treatment. Fixed braces are made using metal or ceramic locks. We also use self-ligaturing lock systems (eg Damon), which improve aesthetics, allow easy cleaning and speeds up the treatment process. A novelty in our clinic is the 3D Smile technique, a method of teeth alignment with the use of transparent invisible splints produced with the help of a computer program, without the need to attach lock

Orthodontics – the course of the procedure

Before starting the treatment, the orthodontist collects patient’s extra oral and intraoral photos and takes impressions and cephalometric photo. Based on the collected documentation and models, he prepares a treatment plan that must be approved by the patient. Next, the doctor establishes a suitable orthodontic apparatus and provides the patient with recommendations about proper hygiene or possible activation of braces at home. At subsequent visits, we control the treatment process.

With the 3D Smile method, the patient receives overlay which he carries until the next follow-up visit. Usually, the treatment requires a dozen or so overlays to achieve the perfect shape to the dental arches.
